How to choose a VPN

The right VPN depends on what you actually need it for. These are the six things I weigh, in roughly the order that matters for most people:

Speed. A VPN always adds some overhead, so the fastest ones matter if you stream in 4K, game, or download large files. NordVPN and Surfshark lead here; all five picks are fast enough for everyday browsing.

Privacy and audits. A “no-logs” claim only means something when an independent firm has verified it. Every VPN on this list has been audited — Proton VPN goes furthest with fully open-source apps.

Jurisdiction. Where the company is based shapes what data it can be compelled to hand over. Switzerland (Proton) and the British Virgin Islands (ExpressVPN, Surfshark) sit outside intrusive data-sharing alliances.

Streaming. If unblocking Netflix, BBC iPlayer or Disney+ is the point, consistency matters more than raw server count. ExpressVPN and NordVPN are the most reliable; CyberGhost’s streaming-labelled servers make it easy for beginners.

Devices and connections. Check how many devices you can protect at once. Surfshark and Proton VPN allow unlimited connections; ExpressVPN caps you at eight.

VPN FAQ

Do I really need a VPN?

If you use public Wi-Fi, want to keep your browsing private from your ISP, or need to access content from another region, a good VPN is worth it. For banking on your home network alone, it is optional — useful, not essential.

Are VPNs legal?

Yes, VPNs are legal in most countries, including the US, UK, EU, and India. A handful of countries restrict or ban them; using one to commit a crime is of course still illegal.

Is a free VPN safe?

Most free VPNs make money from your data or throttle you heavily, which defeats the purpose. The main exception is Proton VPN’s free tier, which is genuinely private and unlimited on data. Otherwise, a cheap paid plan is safer.

Will a VPN slow my connection?

A little — encryption and the extra hop add overhead. With a fast provider on a nearby server the drop is usually small enough that you will not notice it for streaming or browsing.
