How to choose antivirus
The best antivirus for you comes down to how much protection you want bundled in and how light it needs to be. Here is what I weigh:
Protection. Look for consistently high scores from independent labs (AV-Test, AV-Comparatives). Every pick here rates well; Bitdefender leads.
System impact. A good antivirus should not slow your PC. ESET is the lightest; Norton and McAfee are heavier but bundle more.
Extras. Suites now add a VPN, password manager and identity monitoring. If you would pay for those separately, an all-in-one like Norton 360 can be better value.
Devices and family. Check how many devices a plan covers. McAfee’s unlimited-device family plans are the most generous.
Price and renewals. First-year deals are cheap; renewals jump. Note the renewal price before you buy, and set a reminder.
Ease of use. A cluttered interface and constant pop-ups put people off. Bitdefender and ESET stay out of the way; if you want set-and-forget simplicity, favour those.

Is Windows Defender enough?
Microsoft Defender is much better than it used to be and fine as a baseline. A dedicated antivirus adds stronger protection, anti-phishing, and extras like a VPN or password manager that Defender lacks.
Do I need antivirus in 2026?
Yes — threats have shifted to phishing, scams and ransomware, and a good suite protects against those, not just classic viruses. It matters most if you shop, bank or download online.
Is free antivirus safe?
Free tools can catch known malware, but usually lack real-time web protection, support and extras. For most people a cheap first-year paid plan is worth it; Malwarebytes free is a great on-demand second opinion.
Will antivirus slow my computer?
